What Is TAF? Definition & Meaning in Aviation
A TAF (terminal aerodrome forecast) is a coded weather forecast for an airport, usually covering 24 hours or more.
In plain language
It uses the same style of code as a METAR but looks ahead. It may include temporary changes (TEMPO) and gradual changes (BECMG) so crews can plan fuel and alternates.
Example
A forecast for Islamabad might say fog is likely in the early morning (a TEMPO group), warning crews that an alternate airport may be needed.
Why it matters
A TAF tells you what is likely to happen later in the day, so it helps you judge whether fog or storms will clear before your flight. Airlines use it to decide how much extra fuel to carry and which alternate airport to name.
