What Is RVR? Definition & Meaning in Aviation
RVR (runway visual range) is how far a pilot can see along the runway, measured by instruments beside it.
In plain language
It is more useful than general visibility for landing and takeoff. Landing and takeoff are allowed only when RVR is above the minimum for the aircraft, runway and crew.
Example
A METAR might include a group such as R36/0400N, meaning 400 m of visibility along runway 36.
Why it matters
RVR is the figure that decides whether a landing is allowed in fog. A runway may be closed to landings if RVR drops below the minimum for that aircraft and crew, even when the weather report shows a different visibility.
