What Is GPWS? Definition & Meaning in Aviation

GPWS (ground proximity warning system) is an onboard system that warns pilots when the aircraft is too close to the ground or to terrain.

In plain language

Modern versions, often called EGPWS or TAWS, use a terrain database and GPS position to look ahead. They are especially valuable near mountains.

Example

Aircraft flying into airports surrounded by mountains rely on terrain warning systems as one safety layer.

Why it matters

GPWS and its successors help prevent flights into terrain, which matters especially near mountains. They are a core part of why modern airline operations are so safe.
