What Is Codeshare vs Interline? Definition & Meaning in Aviation

Codeshare means a flight is sold under another airline’s code; interline means airlines honour each other’s tickets without sharing flight numbers.

In plain language

With a codeshare, the same flight carries two flight numbers. With an interline agreement, each flight keeps its own number, but the airlines cooperate on ticketing and baggage.

Example

A traveller booking one ticket across two airlines may be on an interline itinerary, while a travel app showing two flight numbers for one flight is showing a codeshare.

Why it matters

The difference matters when plans change: with a codeshare the marketing airline sells you the flight, while with interline each airline simply honours the other’s ticket. It decides who is responsible for you.
